Hope for Social Justice
Jesus asked, ‘Which of these three do you think was a neighbour
to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?’
(Luke 10:36)
This is the penetrating reply which Jesus made to the man who had asked him,
‘And who is my neighbour?’.
The question inspired the parable of the Good Samaritan,
in which Jewish leaders failed to help an injured man,
but the Samaritan had gone out of his way to look after him.
See what Jesus did here? The man asks, ‘who is my neighbour?’
Jesus says, ‘who was the neighbour?’ He puts the onus on us to be neighbourly,
to look after the needs of others, whether they are family or foreigners.
Today, we have the opportunity to follow Jesus by being neighbours to those in desperate need,
even if we have never met them, if they live far away.
Mothers Union provides many opportunities to care for those in need.
Love God, love your neighbour. This is the law of God.
Question for thought: How do I act as a neighbour?
Gracious Lord, we give thanks for the encouraging visit to the Solomon Islands
by Sheran Harper and Jeanette Lawrence from Mary Sumner House in 2024.
Pray for wisdom as Mothers Union members lead in the parenting program,
prison ministry and adult literacy that those who take part will be conscious of your love for them.
We bring before you too the Mothers Union in Tasmania
and give thanks for their visits in nursing homes, hospitals and prisons. AMEN.
