Eternal perspective
In an essay entitled The Weight of Glory, CS Lewis considers what it is we have our sights on.
He says that what we desire affects how we live and that “we are far too easily pleased”
and that “ it would seem Our Lord finds our desires not too strong but too weak.
We are half-hearted creatures fooling about with
drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us”.
He concludes that “to please God … to be the real ingredient in the divine happiness
… it seems impossible, a weight or burden of glory which our thoughts can hardly sustain.
But so it is”. CS Lewis The Weight of Glory and Other Addresses. William Collins, 2013.
For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure,
because we look not at what can be seen but at what cannot be seen;
for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4: 17-18
Let us give thanks for the work of Mothers’ Union in South Sudan.
Amid the fear and hunger are those members who, with the hope and joy of faith,
offer material support and an eternal perspective. Alleluia!
