Overcoming Poverty
‘look after orphans and widows in their distress…’
James 1:27
Someone I know well once visited a slum in a poor country.
No Australian urban ‘slums’ comes anywhere near the suffering he observed.
None of the facilities such as water, sewerage and electricity were available;
no schools, no proper roads; no real work; little food.
But the reason he was there was to visit a little hospital which was run by a missionary doctor.
In it, the poor and dispossessed were cared for and healed.
Here the gospel of Jesus was in practice, and the truth about Jesus was talked about and welcomed.
It was very impressive – and very practical.
Question for self: Do I support missionaries?
Gracious Lord, we thank you that in Mothers Union
there are over 4 million members in 85 countries across the world.
Each country has its own needs and we pray for wisdom
and guidance in supporting and caring for marriages and families.
May they be assured of your love for them and be assured of the strength
and comfort which you alone can give. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
